NURS 6052 Walden University Evidence Based Practice and The Quadruple Aim Paper

Healthcare organizations continually seek to optimize healthcare performance. For years, this approach was a three-pronged one known as the Triple Aim, with efforts focused on improved population health, enhanced patient experience, and lower healthcare costs.

More recently, this approach has evolved to a Quadruple Aim by including a focus on improving the work life of healthcare providers. Each of these measures are impacted by decisions made at the organizational level, and organizations have increasingly turned to EBP to inform and justify these decisions.

To Prepare:

  • Read the articles by Sikka, Morath, & Leape (2015); Crabtree, Brennan, Davis, & Coyle (2016); and Kim et al. (2016) provided in the Resources.
  • Reflect on how EBP might impact (or not impact) the Quadruple Aim in healthcare.
  • Consider the impact that EBP may have on factors impacting these quadruple aim elements, such as preventable medical errors or healthcare delivery.

To Complete:

Write a brief analysis (no longer than 2 pages) of the connection between EBP and the Quadruple Aim.

Your analysis should address how EBP might (or might not) help reach the Quadruple Aim, including each of the four measures of:

  • Patient experience
  • Population health
  • Costs
  • Work life of healthcare providers

Introduction:

The Quadruple Aim is a recent approach to healthcare optimization, which includes improving population health, enhancing the patient experience, lowering healthcare costs, and improving the work life of healthcare providers. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is becoming an increasingly important approach for healthcare organizations to justify decision-making. In this analysis, we will explore the connection between EBP and the Quadruple Aim, focusing on how EBP can impact or not impact each of the four measures.

Analysis:

EBP can significantly help healthcare organizations reach the Quadruple Aim, as each of the four measures can be impacted by the practice. First, EBP can help healthcare providers enhance patient experience by implementing the latest research to improve patient care. For example, implementing clinical guidelines can improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. EBP can also support population health by providing healthcare providers with evidence-based preventive strategies to address health issues in the community, reducing healthcare costs by preventing more severe health conditions in the future.

Second, EBP can provide useful insights into ways to reduce healthcare costs. By identifying evidence-based best practices in healthcare delivery, organizations can avoid unnecessary treatments and incentives that can escalate costs.

Finally, EBP can also improve the work-life of healthcare providers, reducing the number of preventable medical errors which, in turn, eliminates any conflicts in healthcare delivery. By providing healthcare providers with evidence-based up-to-date guidelines, they can streamline their work processes and stay focused on delivering high-quality care to their patients in a timely fashion.

Conclusion:

Evidence-based practice has a significant impact on healthcare providers’ ability to reach the Quadruple Aim. By providing healthcare professionals with the latest research and information in healthcare delivery, organizations can deliver high-quality care, enhance patient experience, promote population health, reduce healthcare costs, and improve the overall work-life of healthcare providers. Healthcare organizations need to continue to make EBP an integral component of their management strategies to achieve the Quadruple Aim.
