Servant Leadership Analysis Scenario: You are a devout Roman Catholic. You grew up living it at home, in school, in the community, and especially in the Church. Your parents, relatives, friends are all in the same congregation and you very familiar with the Bible, Catholic practices and rituals. However, in the last 20 years of your life, you were not very religious. You did not necessarily leave Catholicism nor turned “evil”, just busy with other stuff in life. And then you realized you had a long spiritual “absence.” Now, as a New Year’s resolution, you want to re-evangelize yourself. You connected back with your old Church and your old pastor. Now, you want to make a difference and serve again in your community. Focus on the activities you did again serving the Church, your people and the community – the weekday events you attended i.e. catechism, grade school volunteer teacher, homeless people reach-out, and the likes; the weekend deeds you volunteered in the church itself during the Sunday Mass or Bible studies, etc.; and the impact this whole “change” brought into your life and family. Examine how volunteering enabled you to practice the principles of servant leadership. Please address all the points below in particular order. 1. Summarize your servant leadership volunteer opportunity by sharing the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the experience. 2. Which of Greenleaf’s principles of servant leadership did you implement and learn the most about through completing the servant leadership experience? Provide examples in your discussion. 3. Both Robert Greenleaf and the biblical passages emphasize the idea that power comes from giving it away and that taking the role of a servant can make one a leader. Discuss whether or not your servant leadership volunteer opportunity helped you to find yourself as a leader in this way. Provide supporting examples. 4. Use examples from your servant leadership volunteer opportunity to discuss the idea that serving others as a leader might influence change or produce a positive impact for the greater good. 5. Think about your personal leadership skills and style and discuss what your learned about yourself as a servant leader from completing the volunteer opportunity. 6. Looking forward, how will you use what you have learned about the principles of servant leadership in your workplace as a nurse, in the hospital you are working, and in your personal life?
