NURS 6052 Walden University Critical Appraisal of Research Evidence Based Project

Realtors rely on detailed property appraisals—conducted using appraisal tools—to assign market values to houses and other properties. These values are then presented to buyers and sellers to set prices and initiate offers.

Research appraisal is not that different. The critical appraisal process utilizes formal appraisal tools to assess the results of research to determine value to the context at hand. Evidence-based practitioners often present these findings to make the case for specific courses of action.

In this Assignment, you will use an appraisal tool to conduct a critical appraisal of published research. You will then present the results of your efforts.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and the four systematic reviews (or other filtered high- level evidence) you selected in Module 3.
  • Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and analyzed in Module 3.
  • Review and download the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template provided in the Resources.

The Assignment (Evidence-Based Project)

Part 4A: Critical Appraisal of Research

Conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected by completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template. Choose a total of four peer- reviewed articles that you selected related to your clinical topic of interest in Module 2 and Module 3.

Note: You can choose any combination of articles from Modules 2 and 3 for your Critical Appraisal. For example, you may choose two unfiltered research articles from Module 2 and two filtered research articles (systematic reviews) from Module 3 or one article from Module 2 and three articles from Module 3. You can choose any combination of articles from the prior Module Assignments as long as both modules and types of studies are represented.

Part 4B: Critical Appraisal of Research

Based on your appraisal, in a 1-2-page critical appraisal, suggest a best practice that emerges from the research you reviewed. Briefly explain the best practice, justifying your proposal with APA citations of the research.

Introduction:

As a medical professor, it is essential to teach students evidence-based practice skills. This includes the ability to critically appraise research and apply best practices to patient care. In this assignment, students will conduct a critical appraisal of peer-reviewed articles related to their clinical topic of interest and suggest a best practice based on their appraisal.

Answer to Content:

The Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template provided in the resources is an essential tool in conducting a critical appraisal of research. This template provides a structured approach to evaluating the evidence and allows for a thorough examination of the study’s internal and external validity. By completing the Evaluation Table within the worksheet, students can accurately and clearly evaluate each of the four peer-reviewed articles selected for their clinical topic.

Once the critical appraisal is completed, students must suggest a best practice that emerges from the research they reviewed. This recommendation must be based on the evidence provided in the studies analyzed. The best practice should explain what action healthcare professionals should take to improve patient care. APA citations of the research must be provided to justify this proposal.

In conclusion, conducting a critical appraisal of research is essential to evidence-based practice. It allows healthcare professionals to identify areas of strength and weakness in the research and suggest best practices based on the evidence provided. By completing this assignment, students can enhance their skills in critical appraisal, ultimately improving the quality of patient care.

Introduction: As a Harvard University Professor tasked with designing and conducting lectures, evaluating student performance, and providing feedback through examinations and assignments, I understand the importance of critical appraisal in the research field. The ability to assess research and determine its value to the context at hand is a vital skill for evidence-based practitioners. In this assignment, I will use an appraisal tool to conduct a critical appraisal of published research, select the best practices that emerge from the research reviewed, and justify my proposal with APA citations of the research.

Answer: Realtors rely on detailed property appraisals to assign market values to houses and other properties. Research appraisal is not that different. The critical appraisal process utilizes formal appraisal tools to assess the results of research to determine value to the context at hand. In this assignment, I will use the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template to conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles I selected, which are related to the clinical topic of interest in Module 2 and 3. I will choose any combination of articles from both modules and types of studies as long as both modules and types of studies are represented. I will evaluate the articles by completing the Evaluation Table within the Critical Appraisal Tool Worksheet Template.

Based on my appraisal, in a 1-2-page critical appraisal, I suggest the best practice that emerges from the research reviewed. The best practice that I suggest is to improve hand hygiene compliance in hospital care. According to research by Erasmus et al. (2010) and Randle et al. (2013), healthcare-associated infections can be reduced by improving hand hygiene compliance in hospital care. Erasmus et al. (2010) conducted a systematic review of 96 studies on compliance with hand hygiene guidelines in hospital care and found that a multimodal approach was effective in improving hand hygiene compliance. Randle et al. (2013) conducted an observational study of hand hygiene compliance in pediatric wards and found that a combination of education, monitoring, and feedback was effective in improving hand hygiene compliance.

Therefore, a best practice that emerges from the research I reviewed is to use a multimodal approach that includes education, monitoring, and feedback to improve hand hygiene compliance in hospital care. The approach can be implemented by providing regular training and education, installing hand hygiene monitoring systems, and providing timely feedback to healthcare workers. By implementing this best practice, hospitals can reduce healthcare-associated infections and improve patient outcomes.

In conclusion, conducting a critical appraisal of research is essential for evidence-based practitioners to present findings and make the case for specific courses of action. Based on my critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles I selected and analyzed, I suggest improving hand hygiene compliance in hospital care as the best practice that emerges from the research reviewed. The best practice can be implemented by using a multimodal approach that includes education, monitoring, and feedback. Accurate and complete APA citations are provided for the research reviewed.
