In my weekly practicum journal, I focused on the health and well-being of children aged 4 to 5 years in the prekcare program in the Cumming, GA community. Throughout my journal entries, I aimed to connect my experiences to the South University College of Nursing Conceptual Framework Pillars, which include caring, communication, critical thinking, professionalism, and holism. I also analyzed my prior coursework and experiences to provide a reflective analysis of my learning.

One event that occurred during my practicum was observing a group of children engaging in outdoor play activities. Initially, I had assumed that this playtime was merely a way for the children to expend their energy. However, as I observed more closely, I realized that outdoor play not only promoted physical health but also encouraged social interaction, problem-solving skills, and creativity. This insight changed my perception of the importance of outdoor play in the overall development of young children.

Through my practicum, I also had the opportunity to interact with the prekcare providers and parents. These interactions highlighted the significance of effective communication in the healthcare setting. I witnessed the importance of clear and concise instructions given to children to ensure their safety and well-being. Additionally, I observed how effective communication between the prekcare providers and parents facilitated a collaborative approach to the child’s care.

As I reflected on my thoughts and feelings regarding these new learnings, I realized the importance of holistic care in the early childhood education setting. By considering not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being, prekcare providers can create a nurturing environment that supports the overall development of children. This realization reinforced the pillar of holism in the South University College of Nursing Conceptual Framework, highlighting the need for healthcare professionals to consider the whole person in their care.

Overall, my weekly practicum journal allowed me to gain valuable insights into the care of children in the prekcare program. Through introspection and reflection, I deepened my understanding of the Healthy People 2020 objectives and how they can be applied to the healthcare of young children. By connecting my experiences to the South University College of Nursing Conceptual Framework Pillars, I was able to enhance my knowledge in areas such as caring, communication, critical thinking, professionalism, and holism.
