PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ASSIGNMENT CONTAINS BOTH A BAR GRAPH AND A DATA TABLE!!!!!!

Part I. Using reliable scientific primary and secondary sources, write a short essay (500 words) to address the following prompt:
Discuss how antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a consequence of evolution via
natural selection. Make sure to address evolutionary theory and how it predicts this problem. Here is a link to help get you started on your research

.

Part II. Watch the video below to learn more about antibiotic resistance and evolution
Why Evolution Matters Now?: The case of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Through the story of a multi-drug resistant strain of tuberculosis in the prisons of Russia, we see evolution in action today. This video illustrates how evolution is important to our understanding of disease prevention and treatment in Russia and around the world.

Why Does Evolution Matter Now?

Answer the following questions about the video and submit on the link below.

· Why is the Russian prison system considered to be “ground zero” in the fight against TB?

· What is responsible for the evolution of TB strains that are resistant to multiple drugs?

· How does the misuse of antibiotics affect the evolution of disease-causing bacteria? Use the theory of natural selection to explain the growing resistance to antibiotics.

· Why should we care about a resistant strain of TB in Russia?

Part III.

After you have learned about antibiotic resistance, you will perform a short observational study about the problem of antibiotic resistance in your community. You will conduct a survey (see instrument attached) with at least 10 individuals. These individuals can be your family members or friends. Try to find at least ten people of different ages to survey. Print 10 copies of the survey and ask individuals to answer to  their best of their ability and being honest. Make sure people understand that the survey is anonymous. After you collect the data, take each survey and score the survey using the following method:

· Question 1: If a person answer “yes” assign 1 point. Assign 0 points if they answer “no”.

· Question 2:  If a person answer “yes” assign 0 points. Assign 2 points if they answer “I don’t know” or “no”.

· Question 3: If a person answer “yes” assign 0 points. Assign 1 point if they answer “no”.

· Question 4: If a person answers “false” assign 1 point. Assign 0 points if they answer “true”.

· Question 5: If a person answer “yes” assign 0 points. Assign 1 point if they answer “no”.

If an individual scores a total score of 2 or more, they are contributing to the problem of antibiotic resistance.

You will graph the results in a bar graph using Microsoft Office Excel program. Make sure your graph has a title, labeled axes and appropriate units. Write a short narrative that include the graph along with the answer to the questions:

What percentage of the surveyed are contributing to the problem?

Hint: (# people with score of 2 or more)/(total surveyed) *100)

What general responses did people give to not finish their medication?

Based on your results, do you think the misuse of antibiotics is a problem in your community? Why or why not? What evidence do you have to support your claim? Are there any limitations to your study?

Submit your work here on the link below. (You may submit the questions to the test and the survey analysis at the same time)
